Quani-I want to move like I used to!
We received an application for this young teen after a physical therapy student at Riley Hospital saw a post on our Facebook page regarding a power wheel chair which was donated to the foundation by a very generous donor. This donated motorized wheel chair was never used as the donor’s mother in law passed away before having the opportunity to use it. The very day we posted our Facebook message we received a message from the physical therapy student at Riley Hospital for Children who knew of a 14 year old patient who was in need and who, she hoped, could be the recipient of this wheelchair. After receiving the application for him and after some evaluations by the therapy team at Riley, it was determined that the chair, with some modifications, was the perfect fit for this patient!
The Foundation gifted the power chair to this fine young man who was victim of gun violence sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck with injuries resulting in quadriplegia. Before the accident he enjoyed playing point guard on the basketball team. His goal for rehab and the use of this chair was to “move like I used to” and to getting back to doing the things he enjoys. The mobile chair was adapted for his needs by adding a head array with sip and puff controls so he can maneuver the wheel chair by sipping and puffing through a specialized straw. After having all of the accommodations completed on the wheelchair, and his inpatient therapy completed, he was discharged from Riley Hospital for Children and is doing well at home and is now getting back to moving!
